Abstract

K.K. Abuev's monograph is a multifaceted encyclopedic publication which describes the life and work of the great scientist, educator Chokan Valikhanov through the prism of the history of Kazakhstan and Russia in the mid of 19th century.

Kadyrzhan Kabidenovich Abuev is an honored scholar of Kazakhstan, Academician at the Academy of History and Social Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of History, Professor of Sh. Ualihanov Kokshetau State University. He is known far beyond Kazakhstan as an explorer of Chokan Valikhanov’s biography and works. He is one of the organizers of the annual International Conference “Valikhanov Readings” held at Kokshetau State University.

Fruitful scientific activities began after Kazakhstan gained its independence. In a difficult transition period of the country he clearly defined priorities in the field of scientific research. As soon as an opportunity arises, he immediately turns to topics that were prohibited or interpreted tendentiously in Soviet times. His research interests have always been associated with the history of his native land. He refers to the historical personalities of Khan Abylai, Kenesary Kasymov, Chingiz Valikhanov, Nauan Khazret and others. As a result, in 1997 he published historical sketchesKokshetau, which is now a valuable manual on the history of the region. The sketches are very popular with students, as well as school teachers and scientists. Chokan Valikhanov (2010) encyclopedia was prepared under the supervision of K.K. Abuev. That is why the interest of Professor K.K. Abuev in the personality of Ch. Valikhanov is not accidental, and the preparation of the monograph Chokan Valikhanov and his contemporaries has taken many years.

Proving the relevance of the biographical study of the national history through the prism of life and work of prominent public and state figures, scientists, poets and folk composers who left a noticeable mark on the history and culture of Kazakhstan, the author emphasizes that ChokanValikhanov is one of the so called ‘key figures in our culture.’

This book will become one of the brightest events in the historiography of Kazakhstan and Russia.The multifaceted personality of Ch. Valikhanov received comprehensive coverage against the broad background of the history of the Russian Empire and Kazakhstan in the middle of the 19th century. This explains the encyclopedic nature of the publication, in which the genealogical tree of Ch. Valikhanov is logically and consistently described. The author also touched upon the problematic issues in the biography of ChokanValikhanov, expressing his reasonable point of view on the existing controversial issues. In the book much attention is paid to those who knew Chokan Valikhanov. He had had a lot of close friends and colleagues among the representatives of the Russian democratic untellectuals. The book gives a complete picture of the environment where his personality had formed. Also the book characterizes Chokan Valikhanov’s public and political activities and the main areas of his scientific and creative activities.

The author refers to a wide range of archival sources and literature; the main statements and conclusions have been proved. It will be the fundamental basis for the study of many related problems of the social political history, science and the culture of Eurasian space in the 19th century. It is recommended for students studying the history of Kazakhstan and Russia and successfully used in the curricular.

The monographic study, which investigates in detail the life and work of the great scientist, democrat and educator Chokan Chingizovich Valikhanov, will arouse a great interest both among the scientific communities of Kazakhstan and Russia, as well as among all those who are interested in history. There is no doubt that the book is one of those that will be refered to for decades.
